Dar es Salaam and Bagamoyo
Dar es Salaam is a common point of arrival in Tanzania with flights to Dar International airport being considerably cheaper than flights to Kilimanjaro. Dar has the full range of hotel accommodation available. Nearby Bagamoyo is the place where slave caravans used to end before shipping and the name means ‘loss of heart’.

Dar has a lively night life and numerous beach resorts dotted along its coast. Town tours are possible with destinations such as the village cultural museum and the wood carvers market. The center of town is best avoided due to the heavy traffic. There are several marine parks off the coast of Dar and diving and snorkelling are excellent. Sports fishing and chartered yacht cruises are also available.
Bagamoyo is of interest for birdwatchers as the nearly Ruvu River is home to the recently discovered endemic Ruvu Weaver. If you get there around sunrise the birding is excellent. Bagamoyo is also home to the oldest church in Tanzania and a crocodile farm.
